I guess it was inevitable that this would be considered an interesting factoid in a home remodeling show. Although I'd say it should have been prefaced with "up until the late-20th century." Wait till they find out we had massive books of phone numbers you had to flip through to try to locate a business or a person.

@hankg @Nonya_Bidniss My mobile phone number is from the last century as well. I had my first contract in 1996 and then ported that number to several providers - so I can remember that really well.

@Nonya_Bidniss I can still remember my first phone number, my grandparent's phone number, etc. I have to think before I start typing my current phone number though lol.

@hankg Some fun facts about old phones: In the 80s it was possible to call the "German Democratic Republic" (East Germany) directly from West Germany. But the number of slots was really small. So when my mum wanted to call our relatives there, she told me to keep trying until I got through. Sometimes it took up to half an hour. And of course we had no repeat function because we had a rotary phone.

@hankg Another fun fact: In the old analogue German telephone system, a call was not really terminated until both parties hung up. So if I called a friend and he hung up after the call (and I stayed on the line) and he picked up the phone again to dial someone else, we would be reconnected because the call was never fully terminated.

@alastair Right but the factoid is for viewers not the people in the video.

@hankg@friendica.myportal.social All of those people look old enough to have been alive when landline phones were more common and they still exist today. I have one connected for emergencies.

@heluecht @alastair I always flashback to VH1's "Pop-up Video" from the 1990s where they'd give you little factoids about the artist, song, or music video while the video played. For younger folks, we used to have a channel that just played music videos called "MTV" but then they never played music videos so they made another one called VH1 that eventually also never played music videos.

@hankg @alastair Concerning MTV: This had been the first song they played:
The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star - 1979 HD & HQ
