switching.social (switchingsocial@mastodon.at)'s status on Tuesday, 16-Oct-2018 15:58:46 CEST switching.social With the imminent release of federation for @pixelfed , a reminder that there are many photo sites on the way for the #Fediverse:
As they will federate together, it means many platforms can co-exist without worrying about splintering the userbase.
When a decentralised site grows, it makes the others stronger too, because they all benefit from the same network effect.
Centralised sites just weaken each other until one monopoly site dominates.

baldo (baldo@chaos.social)'s status on Saturday, 13-Oct-2018 14:56:22 CEST baldo @Liberapay Problem is: Instead of working towards an alternative this will make even more people move towards Paypal.

baldo (baldo@chaos.social)'s status on Saturday, 13-Oct-2018 13:16:14 CEST baldo @Liberapay I really like the idea of Liberapay, though with the support of Paypal I'm more than disappointed. Paypal is collecting and sharing tons of data of their customers and more than once withheld donations to NGOs for random reasons.
Instead of providing a libre, free and open payments infrastructure it feels more like moving away from those principles by promoting Paypal.

kino.social 🎞️ 🍿 (kinosocial@mamot.fr)'s status on Monday, 01-Oct-2018 16:28:58 CEST kino.social 🎞️ 🍿 Kino.social is a quiet site where you can watch nice films without any distractions or tracking:
All of the movies are creative commons or public domain titles, embedded from either PeerTube or Archive.org. (There are no YouTube titles due to YT's invasive privacy policies.)
The selection is still very small as we've just started, and we're trying to avoid the "firehose" approach of archive.org.
Post a reply if you have suggestions for films to be added.

Natanji (natanji@chaos.social)'s status on Monday, 01-Oct-2018 17:08:15 CEST Natanji I am fucking *furious* at Constanze Kurz right now! She answered an official inquiry to the CCC (where someone looked for women to speak to about why there were so few women in the CCC) in a completely unacceptable, pretty openly anti-feminist fashion. She denied the request saying "we are a hacker's association, we deal with technical topics [not social ones]".
She proved this way that she is unfit to represent the many women inside the CCC.

Nehmt für Al halt Aluminium und für Ta Tantal oder so.
Aber das ist halt faktisch falsch. -
Aral Balkan (aral@mastodon.ar.al)'s status on Saturday, 29-Sep-2018 11:26:39 CEST Aral Balkan @rhiaro Here’s the response to this argument that I use:
You have two kidneys. You only need one to live. Yet no one can force you to give up the other – even if it could be used to save someone else’s life – because that would be an infraction into your person and an abuse of your human rights. The same goes for your data; which is part of who you are.

And the way she said it... is a terrifying lay justification of surveillance and authoritarianism. This is how you convince the population to give up their privacy.. through fear.. I'm not buying what she's selling.
Fortunately one of the subsequent questions from the floor pointed out that pr.[...]
