It's funny to see people leaving #X to join #bluesky or #threads. They're all billionaire driven spyware, manipulative, toxic spaces.
I mentioned them yesterday during my keynote speech "Quo vadis, Free Software (quo vadis, society" at #FOSSCOMM2024 in Greece.

Michael Vogel (heluecht@pirati.ca)'s status on Monday, 11-Nov-2024 09:56:10 CET Michael Vogel @meanmicio In which way is Bluesky "billionaire driven"? I don't think that Bluesky really fits into the category of "corporate antisocial networks". It's more some hybrid between commercial and open source, I think. -
Luis Falcon (meanmicio@todon.eu)'s status on Monday, 11-Nov-2024 12:27:19 CET Luis Falcon @heluecht I think that when billionaires are on the board ( Jack Dorsey was - estimated $3.1 billion ) and is run by a for-profit company getting money from venture capitals, it meets the criteria.
Dorsey recently left the board, calling Musk "X" the "freedom technology".
I might be wrong, but with those ingredients, I would not eat that dish. -
Michael Vogel (heluecht@pirati.ca)'s status on Monday, 11-Nov-2024 12:27:19 CET Michael Vogel @meanmicio According to bsky.social/about/faq there are no more billionaires on the board:
"Bluesky, the company, is a Public Benefit Corporation. It is owned by Jay Graber and the Bluesky team. The board consists of Jay Graber and Jeremie Miller, the inventor of Jabber/XMPP."
I don't see the "dopamine" problem there either. There is no default algorithm. Instead, you can choose or even create one or more algorithms of your choice. However, there is one big "but" that I think I share with you. And that is the problem that you will somehow need a constant flow of money. And the question is, where is that going to come from in the long term?

Michael Vogel (heluecht@pirati.ca)'s status on Monday, 11-Nov-2024 12:54:30 CET Michael Vogel @meanmicio I deeply hope that they will find this constant flow of money and that they will become the equivalent of "Signal" in the world of social networks, since I guess that (money aside) they are doing a really good job.
But don't misunderstand me: My heart belongs to the Fediverse. I'm coding for it now for more than 10 years and I'm one of the maintainers of one of the systems in the Fediverse.
