Perfect specs are unattainable.

This is what humans excel at: they turn imperfect specs into [mostly] productive outcomes. Society works, in spite of itself.

So, to truly replace humans, AI needs to be imperfect, not up to spec. Get 95% of the job done, then just make shit up. Monte Carlo the fuck out of it, or something like that.

I claimed in a thread today, that projects using GitHub as a mirror, but refusing to process pull requests were being unnecessarily hostile to newcomers. This could be automated.

I decided to check my claim. Hilarity.

Turns out if you append the six characters ".patch" to the URL of the pull request, GitHub serves up a plain-text patch formatted as an mbox format file.

The man-page for `git send-email` specifies that as it's first preferred input format...

I wonder if now is a good time for me to express the view that the AGPLv3 is the most business friendly license of them all!

Especially if contributors hand over copyright to the managing org, as is recommended (leading by example) by the FSF.

If you're going to release your hard work as FOSS, releasing under any other license is a gift to your competitors. And while you maintain full copyright, you can sell people other licenses.

Win-win. Why use anything else?

I rather strongly feel that, for anyone doing admin-type stuff, ssh is a tool worth learning well.

It's extremely versatile and powerful.

After becoming "fluent" with ssh, I've never really seen the point of using VPNs for admin work.

And of course it works over #PageKite (https://pagekite.net/wiki/Howto/SshOverPageKite/), which means I generally have SSH access to all my machines, no matter what network they're on or what firewalls are in the way.

I'm sure @Gargron, as a young, inexperienced developer, has made a ton of mistakes running Mastodon. Young humans do that.

Eugen is a person. A lot of people claiming to worry about "social media harassment" seem worryingly oblivious to that as they dogpile and heap on the negativity.

You're entitled to your frustration, but don't be the problem you claim to want to solve.

Dear fellow #Mastodon users. Please be patient with the people creating Mastodon and GNU Social.

Writing software takes time, and the teams working on these applications are very small.

Most of them are also wearing many hats. Some are students, others have full time non-Mastodon jobs. Some admin instances in addtion to writing code.

The Twitter kitchen probably has more people working in it than the entire #Fediverse. Please adjust your expectations accordingly! 😄
