I rather strongly feel that, for anyone doing admin-type stuff, ssh is a tool worth learning well.
It's extremely versatile and powerful.
After becoming "fluent" with ssh, I've never really seen the point of using VPNs for admin work.
And of course it works over #PageKite (https://pagekite.net/wiki/Howto/SshOverPageKite/), which means I generally have SSH access to all my machines, no matter what network they're on or what firewalls are in the way.
