@juzam over-engineering and no added value. Yep. Actually in the case of the tablet you describe even counter productive for the restaurant. Bad.

@juzam is it just a static menu or can you use it to order drinks/food and/or does it offer special "features"?

I can confirm that this is a thing: mother phones me to ask about Wannacry! ransomeware and whether TV news are exxagerating. "No mom, they aren't".

Everybody I know has found any number of excuses to not watch ESC with me tonight. Maybe I should find one as well ...

@dadegroot particularly daft as I fell into a trap: the menu said "configure your gin & tonic". First came a very large (30--35) selections of gin, but tapping on one didn't get me further. After 3 or 4 attempts I gave up to later hear from the waitress that it doesn't work that way.

At an Indonesian restaurant in Holland we experienced tablets for ordering; that was a very nice experience actually, but it was more of a diner-type place in which the electronic menu didn't hurt; au contraire.

Last night's restaurant presented each patron with an iPad as menu. The app, while very attractive, was terribly slow in scrolling and did nothing to enhance the menu-chosing experience, particularly since we couldn't order from the app. A typical case of over-engineering, and all-in-all an experience I do not need again.
